Quick summary
1. Claude (by Anthropic) is strongest at long documents, writing, and coding, and with Claude Code it can do real work on your computer.
2. Plans: Free, Pro $20/mo ($17/mo billed yearly), Max from $100/mo.
3. Best for office workers and small business owners who want to hand off repetitive tasks. Not the best pick for image or video generation.

When you start looking at AI tools for work, the same four names keep coming up: Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. The hard part isn't knowing the names. It's figuring out which one actually fits your work.

I run a small energy business in South Korea and use AI every day for paperwork. In this series I review each tool's pros, cons, and pricing in one post, then compare all four in a final table. First up is the one I use most: Claude.

What Is Claude?

An AI assistant that is strong at writing, document work, and coding, and that you can let operate your computer to get tasks done.

Claude is made by Anthropic, a US AI company. As of October 2026 the model lineup is Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Fable 5.1, and Haiku 4.5. You can use it on the web, desktop apps, and mobile apps.

How Much Does Claude Cost? (Pricing, October 2026)

Pro$20 ($17 billed yearly)More usage than Free + Claude Code, Projects, Chrome and Microsoft 365 integrations
MaxFrom $100 ($100 / $200)5x or 20x the usage of Pro, early access to new features

Prices are in USD and tax is added depending on where you live. Checked on the official pricing page on October 5, 2026.

Pros

  • Great with long text and documents. Report drafts, business letters, and summaries of long PDFs read naturally.
  • Claude Code lets it do real work on your computer. Finding files, cleaning up spreadsheets, drafting documents. I use it to run a team of task-specific AI assistants for my company, and I'm not a developer.
  • Pro unlocks every tool. Max doesn't add new tools, only more usage. So start with Pro and decide later.

Cons

  • You will notice usage limits. On heavy days I hit the Pro limit and have to wait a few hours.
  • Image and video generation are not its focus. If you mainly create images, ChatGPT or Gemini is easier.
  • Billed in USD, so outside the US the amount shifts with exchange rates.

Who Should Use Claude?

People who write a lot of documents, small business owners who want to automate repetitive office work, and developers. If you mostly make images or video, or live inside Google apps, read the ChatGPT and Gemini posts in this series first.

💡 Tip: Use the free plan for a few days. Upgrade to Pro only when you keep hitting the limit. That's the cheapest way to find out if it's worth it.

Usage only. Max gives 5x or 20x Pro's usage; the tools are the same.

Q. Can I use Claude outside the US?
Yes, in most countries. Check Anthropic's supported regions list for yours.
